Sponge Cleaning Balls for Continuous Online Tube Cleaning

Sponge cleaning balls are soft, open-cell or closed-cell foam balls designed for daily maintenance cleaning in heat exchangers, condensers, and chiller tube bundles. Their porous, compressible structure deforms slightly as they pass through the tube, making full contact with the entire inner wall surface and wiping away soft deposits, biofilm, and light scale on every pass.

Unlike solid rubber cleaning balls, sponge balls are gentle on tube walls, making them the preferred choice for copper, brass, and thin-walled titanium tubes where abrasion is a concern.

How Sponge Cleaning Balls Work in an Online System

Full-Contact Wiping Action

Each sponge cleaning ball is sized 1–2mm larger than the tube inner diameter. As water pressure drives it through the tube, the sponge compresses and expands against the tube wall, creating a wiping action that cleans the full tube circumference in a single pass. No blind spots, no channeling.

Continuous Circulation, No Shutdown Required

Sponge balls are the standard ball type used in continuous online tube cleaning systems such as TAPROGGE and Beaudrey. The circulation pump returns each ball to the inlet after every pass, running the cleaning cycle 24 hours a day without interrupting system operation. For condenser-specific continuous cleaning, see condenser tube cleaning balls.

Preventing Scale Before It Forms

The most effective use of sponge cleaning balls is preventive, keeping tubes clean from day one rather than waiting for fouling to build up. Once hard mineral scale forms, sponge balls alone may not be enough to remove it. At that stage, switching to abrasive cleaning balls for a deep-clean pass before returning to sponge maintenance is the recommended approach.

Applications

HVAC Chiller Tube Bundles

Sponge cleaning balls are the go-to maintenance ball for commercial HVAC chiller systems. Running them daily in an online circulation system prevents the calcium carbonate scale that reduces chiller efficiency and drives up energy costs. Standard PU sponge works well with typical municipal cooling water chemistry.

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

In process industries, sponge balls maintain tube cleanliness in heat exchanger applications where gentle daily cleaning is preferred over periodic aggressive cleaning shutdowns. Particularly effective in pharmaceutical and food processing heat exchangers where hygiene standards require consistent tube surface condition.

Condenser Tubes in Power Plants

Surface condensers in power generation require constant fouling prevention to maintain vacuum and turbine efficiency. Sponge cleaning balls handle the daily soft-deposit removal while condenser tube cleaning balls cover precision-fit continuous circulation requirements.

Sensitive Tube Materials

Copper alloy, brass, and thin-walled titanium tubes in heat exchangers require non-abrasive cleaning. The softness of sponge balls makes them safe for these materials, unlike firmer rubber balls for heat exchangers or abrasive types.

Custom Sizes and OEM Supply

Sponge cleaning balls are available in diameters from 6mm to 250mm with density grade (soft, medium, firm) customized to your tube specification and flow rate. OEM orders accepted including custom color coding and private labeling.
