Rubber cleaning balls are solid or semi-solid elastic balls used to clean the inner walls of tubes and pipes in heat exchangers, condensers, and industrial pipeline systems. Sized slightly larger than the tube inner diameter, they create a snug interference fit that scrubs the tube wall as water pressure drives them through, removing scale, biofilm, and fouling deposits on every pass.
As a manufacturer, we produce rubber cleaning balls in natural rubber, EPDM, NBR, polyurethane, and food-grade materials, covering the full range of industrial cleaning applications from standard cooling water systems to chemical-resistant and high-temperature environments.
The interference fit between ball diameter and tube ID is what produces cleaning pressure. A ball that varies even 0.3mm across a batch will deliver inconsistent results, some balls clean well, others pass through without contact. Our rubber cleaning balls are manufactured to tight diameter tolerances so every ball in the batch performs the same.
After passing through thousands of tubes under water pressure, a rubber cleaning ball must return to its original shape. Poor elastic recovery means the ball gradually shrinks below cleaning diameter and loses effectiveness. We specify Shore A hardness and rebound elasticity for every material grade to ensure long service life.
Cooling water treatment chemicals, process fluids, and high operating temperatures all degrade rubber over time. Choosing the right rubber compound extends ball service life significantly. If your system runs chemically treated water or elevated temperatures, see our high-temperature cleaning balls and chemical resistant cleaning balls for performance-rated options.
| Material | Key Property | Best For |
| Natural Rubber (NR) | Standard elasticity, cost-effective | General-purpose tube cleaning |
| EPDM Rubber | Heat & ozone resistant | High-temperature systems (up to 150°C) |
| Nitrile Rubber (NBR) | Oil & fuel resistant | Oil & gas, petrochemical systems |
| Polyurethane (PU) | High wear resistance | Abrasive environments, long service life |
| Food-grade Silicone / PU | FDA compliant | Food processing, pharmaceutical |

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are the most common application for rubber cleaning balls. Running balls continuously through the tube bundle prevents fouling from accumulating, maintaining thermal efficiency without shutdown. For heat exchanger-specific sizing and system compatibility, see heat exchanger cleaning balls.
Power plant surface condensers and HVAC chiller tube bundles require consistent online cleaning to maintain vacuum efficiency and cooling capacity. Rubber balls sized to condenser tube ID circulate through the system 24/7. For continuous circulation system compatibility, see condenser tube cleaning balls.
In water distribution lines and industrial process pipelines, rubber balls act as a soft pig, scrubbing the pipe wall during normal flow without requiring a shutdown. For pipeline-specific applications, see pipe cleaning balls.
For heavy mineral scale or hard biological deposits that soft rubber cannot remove, abrasive cleaning balls add a corundum or abrasive outer layer for aggressive mechanical cleaning. For extreme fouling, peeling sponge cleaning balls provide a sacrificial abrasive surface designed for deep cleaning passes.
We manufacture rubber cleaning balls in diameters from 6mm to 250mm with hardness customized to your tube specification. OEM and ODM orders are accepted, including private labeling and custom color coding by ball grade.
