Pipe cleaning balls are firm elastic balls used to scrub the inner walls of industrial pipelines, water distribution lines, and drainage systems. Driven through the pipe by water pressure, they act as a soft inline pig, removing scale, sediment, rust, and biofilm buildup from the pipe wall in a single pass without requiring a full mechanical cleaning shutdown.

Unlike tube cleaning balls designed for short heat exchanger tube bundles, pipe cleaning balls are built for longer pipeline runs with higher differential pressures and more variable flow conditions.

How Pipe Cleaning Balls Work

Interference Fit and Scrubbing Pressure

Each ball is sized 1–2mm larger than the pipe inner diameter. As water pressure drives it through the line, the ball maintains contact with the full pipe circumference, scrubbing the wall surface continuously. The interference fit creates the cleaning pressure, so ball sizing to your exact pipe ID is critical for effective cleaning.

Soft Pig Functionality Without Shutdown

Traditional pipeline pigging requires isolation valves, pig launchers, and system shutdown. Pipe cleaning balls achieve comparable soft-deposit removal during normal system operation, making them practical for routine maintenance on lines that cannot afford downtime. For hard scale or compacted deposits, abrasive cleaning balls provide the additional mechanical force needed.
