Rubber Balls for Heat Exchanger Tube Cleaning

Rubber balls for heat exchangers are precision-sized elastic balls used to clean the inner surface of heat exchanger tubes, removing scale, biofilm, and fouling deposits that reduce thermal efficiency and increase energy consumption. Sized slightly larger than the tube inner diameter, each ball makes full wall contact as water pressure drives it through the tube, scrubbing the surface clean on every pass.

We supply heat exchanger rubber balls in natural rubber, EPDM, NBR, and polyurethane to match the chemical and temperature requirements of your specific process fluid and tube material.

How to Choose the Right Rubber Ball for Your Heat Exchanger

By Fouling Level

For light to moderate fouling in a well-maintained system, standard rubber balls provide consistent mechanical scrubbing without risk of tube surface damage. For soft biofilm and thin scale deposits, sponge cleaning balls or sponge rubber balls offer a gentler cleaning action. For hardened mineral scale that rubber cannot shift, abrasive cleaning balls are required for the recovery pass.

By Operating Temperature

Standard natural rubber balls handle temperatures up to approximately 80°C. For high-temperature heat exchangers operating above this range, EPDM or silicone-based balls maintain their elasticity and cleaning effectiveness without hardening or deforming. See high temperature cleaning balls for high-temperature-specific options.

By Process Fluid

Rubber material must be compatible with the fluid passing through the heat exchanger. NBR balls resist oil, fuel, and hydrocarbon contact. EPDM balls resist steam, hot water, and dilute chemical solutions. For aggressive chemical environments, see chemical resistant cleaning balls.

Applications

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are the most common application for heat exchanger rubber balls. Regular cleaning passes, either in a continuous online circulation system or on a scheduled manual basis, prevent fouling from compounding and keep heat transfer efficiency at rated capacity. For a full overview of heat exchanger cleaning ball options, see cleaning balls for heat exchangers.

Refinery and Petrochemical Heat Exchangers

Process heat exchangers in refineries and petrochemical plants handle hydrocarbons and aggressive process fluids at elevated temperatures. NBR rubber balls resist oil and chemical contact while maintaining effective tube wall scrubbing. See cleaning balls for the oil & gas industry for oil and gas-specific applications.

Food and Pharmaceutical Process Heat Exchangers

Heat exchangers in food processing and pharmaceutical manufacturing require cleaning balls made from FDA-compliant materials that will not contaminate the product stream. Food-grade rubber and silicone options are available on request. See cleaning balls for the food & beverage industry and cleaning balls for the pharmaceutical industry.
