Foam Cleaning Balls for Low-Pressure and Sensitive Tube Systems

Foam cleaning balls are the softest option in the tube cleaning ball range. Made from open-cell or closed-cell foam, they compress easily under low water pressure and expand to make full contact with the tube wall, gently wiping away soft deposits, biofilm, and light fouling without applying any mechanical stress to the tube surface.

Where sponge cleaning balls suit most standard continuous cleaning systems, foam balls are the preferred choice when tube wall sensitivity, low system pressure, or minimum abrasion are the primary requirements.

When to Choose Foam Over Sponge or Rubber

Low-Pressure Cooling Systems

Foam cleaning balls pass through tubes at lower differential pressures than denser sponge or rubber types. In systems where pump head is limited, or where tube runs are short with minimal pressure drop available, foam balls circulate reliably without stalling or jamming. For higher-pressure systems or longer tube bundles, rubber cleaning balls or sponge rubber balls are more suitable.

Sensitive Tube Materials

Thin-walled tubes, soft copper alloys, and coated tube surfaces are vulnerable to surface damage from harder cleaning balls. Foam balls apply minimal contact force while still achieving full-circumference wiping, making them safe for tube materials that cannot tolerate even light abrasion.

Light Fouling and Biofilm Prevention

Foam cleaning balls excel at removing soft biofilm and freshly deposited scale before it hardens. For systems with good water quality where fouling is light and consistent, foam balls running in a continuous online circuit keep tubes clean with the lowest possible mechanical intervention. If scale has already hardened, abrasive cleaning balls will be needed first to restore tube surface condition.

Applications

HVAC Chiller and Cooling Tower Systems

Small to mid-size HVAC chillers with lower circulation pump pressures benefit from foam cleaning balls running in continuous online systems. They keep evaporator tube bundles clean without risking surface damage on thin copper or cupronickel tubes. For larger HVAC systems with higher flow rates, see cleaning balls for HVAC systems.

Food and Beverage Processing

Heat exchangers in food production environments require non-abrasive cleaning to protect tube coatings and meet hygiene standards. Food-grade foam cleaning balls are FDA-compliant and leave no residue, making them suitable for pasteurizers, plate coolers, and product-contact heat exchangers. See also cleaning balls for the food & beverage industry.

Pharmaceutical Heat Exchangers

Process heat exchangers in pharmaceutical manufacturing operate under strict surface cleanliness requirements. Foam balls provide effective soft-deposit removal without introducing abrasive particles or causing tube wall micro-scratching that could harbor contamination. See cleaning balls for the pharmaceutical industry for the full pharmaceutical range.

Marine Cooling Systems

Seawater-cooled heat exchangers on vessels and offshore platforms often use titanium or duplex stainless tubes that are expensive to repair. Foam cleaning balls protect these tube surfaces while managing biofouling from seawater. For marine-specific applications, see cleaning balls for marine cooling systems.

Custom Sizes and OEM Supply

Foam cleaning balls are manufactured in diameters from 6mm to 250mm with foam density grade customized to your system pressure and tube specification. OEM and private label orders are accepted.
