Tube Cleaning Balls for Heat Exchangers, Condensers, and Industrial Pipelines

Tube cleaning balls are elastic balls sized slightly larger than the tube inner diameter, designed to be driven through industrial tubes by water pressure. As each ball passes through, it scrubs the tube wall, removing scale, biofilm, and fouling deposits that reduce flow efficiency and heat transfer performance.

We manufacture tube cleaning balls in rubber, sponge, foam, and abrasive types to cover every fouling severity level and tube material. If you’re not sure which type fits your application, use the selection guide below.

How to Select the Right Tube Cleaning Ball

By Fouling Severity

The hardness of the fouling inside your tubes is the most important factor in ball selection.

For soft deposits, biofilm, and light scale forming in a well-maintained system, sponge cleaning balls or foam cleaning balls provide gentle daily cleaning without risking tube surface damage.

For moderate mineral scale and systems that run without continuous online cleaning, standard rubber cleaning balls deliver consistent mechanical scrubbing with good durability over repeated passes.

For hard calcium carbonate or sulfate scale that soft types cannot shift, abrasive cleaning balls with corundum coating provide the mechanical force needed to restore tube surface condition.

By Tube Application

Different tube systems have different cleaning requirements:

By Tube Material

Tube material determines how much contact force is safe to apply. Soft copper, brass, and titanium tubes need non-abrasive sponge or foam balls. Carbon steel and stainless steel tubes can handle standard rubber or abrasive types without risk of surface damage.

Applications

Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

Tube cleaning balls are the standard maintenance method for shell-and-tube heat exchangers across chemical, power, HVAC, and process industries. Running balls through the tube bundle at regular intervals, or continuously in an online system, prevents fouling from compounding into a costly cleaning shutdown. For dedicated heat exchanger options, see cleaning balls for heat exchangers.

Power Plant and Industrial Condensers

Steam turbine condensers and industrial cooling condensers depend on clean tube surfaces to maintain thermal performance. Tube cleaning balls in these systems run continuously or on scheduled intervals to prevent calcium and biological fouling from reducing condenser vacuum or cooling capacity. See cleaning balls for power plant condensers for power generation-specific applications.

Chemical and Oil & Gas Process Tubes

Process heat exchangers in refineries and chemical plants handle aggressive fluids and high temperatures that accelerate fouling. NBR and EPDM tube cleaning balls resist chemical attack while maintaining cleaning effectiveness. See cleaning balls for the chemical industry and cleaning balls for the oil & gas industry.
