Chemical resistant cleaning balls are manufactured from rubber and polymer compounds selected for compatibility with acids, alkalis, solvents, and other aggressive process fluids found in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, and oil and gas heat exchanger systems. Standard natural rubber balls swell, crack, or dissolve on contact with many industrial chemicals, losing their dimensional integrity and contaminating the system. Chemical resistant types maintain their physical properties and cleaning effectiveness throughout their service life in chemically aggressive environments.
Different rubber compounds resist different chemical families. The right ball material depends on which chemical your tube system carries:
| Chemical Type | Recommended Material |
| Acids (dilute to moderate) | EPDM, PTFE-coated |
| Strong acids (H₂SO₄, HCl, HNO₃) | PTFE-coated, fluorosilicone |
| Alkalis and caustics | EPDM, NBR |
| Oils, fuels, hydrocarbons | NBR, fluorosilicone |
| Solvents (ketones, esters) | Fluorosilicone, PTFE-coated |
| Oxidising chemicals | PTFE-coated, fluorosilicone |
If you are unsure of your fluid’s compatibility with a specific rubber compound, provide your process fluid name and concentration when requesting a quote and we will confirm the correct material selection.
| Material | Key Chemical Resistance | Temperature Limit |
| EPDM | Dilute acids, alkalis, steam | ~150°C |
| Nitrile Rubber (NBR) | Oils, fuels, hydrocarbons | ~100°C |
| Fluorosilicone | Broad chemical resistance, fuels, solvents | ~200°C |
| PTFE-Coated | Strong acids, oxidisers, solvents | ~200°C |

Heat exchangers handling acids, alkalis, and solvents in chemical manufacturing require cleaning balls that resist the process fluid on contact. EPDM and PTFE-coated balls are the standard choice for most chemical process environments. See cleaning balls for the chemical industry.
Pharmaceutical heat exchangers and process tubes require both chemical resistance and FDA-compliant materials to avoid product contamination. PTFE-coated and food-grade fluorosilicone options meet both requirements. See cleaning balls for the pharmaceutical industry.
Refinery heat exchangers handling crude fractions, naphtha, and other hydrocarbons need NBR or fluorosilicone balls that resist oil and solvent contact without swelling or degrading. See cleaning balls for the oil & gas industry.
